On Schindler's List

Schindler's List was directed by the famous American director --Steven Spielberg. This masterpiece won seven Oscars in 1993 and was no doubt a successful wok. It is a movie that related with “holocaust”. During the World War II, people suffered a lot, especially the Jews in Europe. Then Schindler's List became the saviour of these poor people.

We all know that in September 1939, the army of Germany invaded Poland in only two weeks. What’s worse, the dreadful invasion brought about uncountable severe holocausts that nearly caused the genocide of Jews who were considered to be the lowest status race according to Hiteler’s propaganda. This was a significant time that called for heros.

Then, Oskar Schindler turned up. He was a German businessman and a wealthy womanizer who wasn't afraid to throw his money around. He was also a war profiteer, in order to make a big fortune, he used Polish Jews as cheap labour to produce cookware for the Third Reich. But as time went by, something changed in his heart. Schindler witnessed the cruelty and violence of Nazi, he realised the immense evil of Nazism. When his own employees were sent to a work camp, they came under the terrorising reign of sadistic Nazi Amon Goeth. With the help of his accountant, Itzhak Stern, Schindler created a list of "essential" Jews. That was the Schindler's List. With the money he had, he bribed Goeth and Schindler managed to get 1,100 people released from the camp and brought to the safety of his munitions factory in Czechoslovakia. His name was remembered by the Jews.

“I could have got more out. I could have got more. I don't know. If I'd just... I could have got more.” “If I'd made more money... I threw away so much money. If I'd just... ” “I didn't do enough!…” Although Schindler had rescued large numbers of Jews, he still blamed himself of not having been able to help more. “Today is history. Today will be remembered. Years from now the young will ask with wonder about this day. Today is history and you are part of it.” Goeth knowed it, but he didn’t know that he had become a notorious person who was also been remembered by people. What a pity!

About Smoking

Nowadays, many people have the habit of smoking. When you walk on the road, there are people smoking around you. Some people think that it is a cool behavior, especially the young boys. While, many people prefer to take it as an unhealthy habit. So do I.

I don't like those people who smokes.I don't like the smell.

It is almost known to all that smoking is bad for people's health. King James Ⅰ, who may be considered the first anti-smoking person, described tobacco smoking as "a custom loathsome to the eye, hateful to the nose, harmful to the nose, dangerous to the lungs". Scientific researchs show that smoking can lead to heart disease, cancer and other problem. The World Health Organization says diseases linked to smoking kill at least two million five-hundred-thousand persons each year.

So measures have been taken to help people keep away from the harm of smoking. In many cities, smoking is forbidden in public places. The danger of smoking is warned of everywhere even on the packaging of the cigarette. And newspapers are asked not to publish advertisements for cigarettes. What's more,"World No Tobacco Day" is observed every year as the biggest compaign against smoking.

So,if you want to keep healthy, stay away from cigarette and stop smoking.

About Refugee

In December 2000,the United Nations general assembly decided to put on June 20th every year as the "World Refugee Day".

A refugee is a person who flees to a foreign country or power to escape danger or persecution. Over the past 60 years ,there have been more than 75 million people around the whole world who are forced to leave their homes because of the war、disaster or other reasons. They live in shacks with no water,no electricity and no sewage system. They suffer a lot, they live in terrible situation. We can't image how can they survive.

They live homelessly and helplessly,so they have to depend on good will and charity of social organizations. Everyone of us should have a right and fair attitude towards them. No discrimi -nation and much sympathy. We can give them a hand whenever it is possible.

Happiness

We always convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, than another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more content when they are. After that we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. we will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage.
We always tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together. when we get a nice car, and are able to go on a nice vocation when we retire. The truth is, there's no better time than right now. If not now, when? our life will always be filled with challenges. It's best to admit this to ourselves and decide to be happy anyway.
One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred Souza. He said."for a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin-real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, someting to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life." This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment that you have.
And remember that time waits for no one. So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school; until you get married, until you get divorced; until you have kids; until you retire; until you get a new car or home; until spring; until you are born again to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy….
Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So, work like you don't need money, love like you've never been hurt, And dance like no one's watching.

'Happiness' gene helps you look on the bright side

Positive people may owe their optimism to a gene variant that helps them dwell on the good and ignore the bad.
That's the conclusion from a study examining people's subliminal preferences for happy, neutral, and threatening images.
Volunteers who had inherited two copies of the "long" variant of 5-HTTLPR – a gene that controls transport of the mood-affecting neurotransmitter serotonin – showed clear avoidance of negative images, such as fierce animals, and a clear preference for positive ones, such as puppies. People with this variant combination are dubbed "LL" carriers.
The effect wasn't seen in volunteers with at least one version of the "short" variant of the same gene – these people showed no strong preference whatever the content of the images.Time lapse
In repeated tests, the 97 volunteers had less than a second to identify dots hidden in one or other of a pair of adjacent images. Each pair contained a neutral image alongside one that was either positive or negative.
The researchers found that LL volunteers took 18.3 milliseconds longer on average to spot the dots in a negative rather than neutral image, suggesting a subliminal aversion to bad images.
Conversely, they noticed the dots 23.5 milliseconds sooner in the positive images, such as cuddly puppies, than in the neutral ones, suggesting they were subliminally drawn to them. "It sounds very small, but in terms of attentional time, it's consistent," says team leader Elaine Fox of the University of Essex in Colchester, UK.Optimistic streak
Fox and her colleagues conclude that the LL volunteers may be primed to seek out positive events and ignore negative events.
Earlier studies had revealed a tendency for negativity and anxiety among individuals with at least one short variant of the gene, but the study is the first to reveal an optimistic streak in LL individuals.
"A number of mechanisms may contribute to this difference, and the authors have provided good evidence that attentional bias in the processing of emotional stimuli may be one of those mechanisms," says Turhan Canli, who has studied the same phenomenon at Stony Brook University in New York.

Yesterday&Movie

Yesterday,we enjoyed a "movie day".
We only had four classes the whole day. After class, one of my roommates told me that she wanted to see a movie on my computer. Without hesitation,I agreed. I didn't want to see anything at first. But when she began to see, I also sit down, before my computer.
Nowadays, a film named" Slumdog Millionaire" is very popular. It has won many awards. I also think it is not a bad one. Something was called on my mind:No matter how hard it will be,we should always face the fact and try our best to conquer the enermy, just like the actor in the film. Nothing can stop us from struggling on the road to success. The most important thing that we should remember is JUST DO IT!
Then, we saw a Japanese film named"Love the Sky".It tells us something about pure love on campus. As seven of my roommate were not in the dormitory at the same time. We had played in for three time for three different "groups". But there is still one person having not seen it. So maybe I have to see it for the forth time. But,to be frank,it is not a very good film.
